Original, source-backed articles about running small systems, static sites, HTTP, DNS, TLS, and operations.
Posts are original articles written for this site. Each one is script-free, source-backed, and tied to the same operational reality the rest of the site records: how a small, static, publicly served system is built, secured, and kept honest.
A multipart boundary splits the body into parts
Multipart/form-data is one HTTP representation containing several independently described parts. A client chooses a boundary parameter, places that value in the Content-Type header, and writes matching delimiter lines into the body. The arrangement lets one request carry text fields and binary files without pretending that all bytes share one JSON or text grammar. The boundary is framing metadata, not a security decision or a file-type detector.

Server-Sent Events stream one way
Server-Sent Events carry server-to-client updates in a streaming HTTP response. They do not turn HTTP into a bidirectional socket, and automatic reconnection does not make delivery durable. Treat event framing, connection lifetime, retained history, and application acknowledgment as separate contracts.
A response contains framed text events An SSE response uses text/event-stream and UTF-8. Fields are line-based, and a blank line ends a block. Multiple data lines within one event are joined with newline characters. A colon-prefixed comment is ignored as event data, so it can carry a heartbeat without triggering an application message.

Socket activation passes a listener to a compatible service
Socket activation lets systemd open a listening endpoint before the application process starts. Activity on that endpoint can then trigger a compatible service, which receives descriptors for sockets the manager already owns. The useful boundary is listener ownership versus application lifetime. An open endpoint is not yet proof that the application has initialized, accepted a request, or produced a correct response.

systemd restart policies need explicit failure and rate rules
A restart policy decides whether a service manager should try another process after the current one ends. It can recover from a transient failure, but it cannot correct a missing configuration or a deterministic bug. The useful contract has three parts: which endings qualify, how long to wait, and how many starts are permitted within a time window. Those settings answer different questions.

Use a worktree for a hotfix without disturbing a feature
A hotfix need not displace unfinished feature work from its directory. A linked worktree can start from a chosen release commit while the original directory retains its staged changes, unstaged edits, and untracked files. The workflow succeeds when the fix is tested on the correct baseline and the original work remains intact. Merely creating a second folder does not establish either result.

A leaked connection drains the pool
A pool leak is an ownership failure: application work finishes, but its borrowed connection remains checked out. The database may still answer other clients normally while this application has no leases left. Treat release as part of the operation’s contract, including exceptions and early returns, rather than a cleanup courtesy after success.

The horizontal autoscaler scales on demand
The HorizontalPodAutoscaler adjusts a scalable workload toward configured metric targets. Its output is a desired replica count, not a guarantee that additional Pods are already serving traffic. Scheduling, image startup, initialization, readiness, and available node capacity determine how quickly that recommendation becomes useful capacity. Design the control loop together with those delays.

Certificate transparency makes issuance observable
Certificate Transparency makes public TLS certificate issuance observable. It does not determine whether a domain owner authorized an issuance, replace certificate-chain validation, or guarantee that every certificate everywhere is logged. A misissued certificate can have valid transparency evidence. The benefit is a public trail that monitors and affected owners can investigate.
